Stephen Green the father of Marshall W., was a native of Licking County Ohio and was born May 15 1808. He emigrated to Morgan County when he was twelve or foutteen years of age. His death occurtred in 1888. When he came to this county there was but one house in Jacksonville and there was then little prospect ofor the upbuilding og the bustling thriving city which it has since become. He entered land four miles north of the then embryo city just after his reaching the age of twenty one. He owned 535 acres of land as good as ever the sun shone upon. He also owned a residence in Jacksonville for which he paid $12,000 was a large owner of bank stock, and a cattle dealer of prominence. His wife whose maiden name was Cynthia Riggs was from Tennessee and her father Scott Riggs was born in North Carolina. Stephen was one of ten children three of whom in 1889 were still living.
BIRTH: In the census we got the date and place of birth. See Stephen Green. In the 1860 Census of Morgan Co Jacksonville Illinois a Henry Riggs is listed as 48 a farmer born in Tenn. I would think this is Cynthia's brother.
Came to America from Ireland in 1851. Settled in Burlington KS.
DEATH: Have a family history given us from the family reunion. Plus alot of other family histories one written by Azalea Carr in 1969.
BIOGRAPHY: From a family history of the "The Johnston Family, Pioneers of Middle Park, Colorado" Written by Azalea Carr, 1969. I am going to put in a portion of what is said. " James Henry Johnston and Margeretta McNamara were married in Belfast, Ireland about 1847. They had a daughter, Ellen, who was born in Belfast and a son, Tom, who was born on Nov 11 1849. In 1851, with their two children they arrived in America and settled in Burlington, Kansas: where another son, James was born about 1853. They grew up in Kansas as normal young citizens of their new land. In fact, Tom never gave his citizenshop a thought, although he was born in Ireland. He served in the Indian Wars and was sheriff of Grand County, but finally, in about 1906, when on the election board at Grand Lake he found he had to be naturalized. So after fifty years in the United States, Tom became a citizen.
From "The Johnson Family Pioneers of Middle Park, Colorado" Written by Azalea Carr, 1969
"Hubbard Miner was a surveyor and always wanted to be moving to a new frontier. so they moved where the work was. They moved to Iowa about August 1, 1854. Their son, Willard Miner, was born in 1856 in Iowa. A daughter, Susan Miner was born in Rising Sun, Iowa on May 22 1859. A son, Frank, was also born in Iowa. Another move, this time to Minnesota. A daughter, Mary, was born at LeSueur, Minnesota and another daughter, Laura was born at LeSueur, also. They moved to Atchison, Kansas then and a daughter, Lucy was born at Atchison. When Susan was 16, the family went from Atchison Kansas to Denver, Colorado in a covered wagon. Lucy was just a baby and there was another little sister, Alta who learned to walk in the covered wagon.
The mother's mind was never free from fear of Indians and the trip was hard at best with all of the children. At Gerorgetown, Colorado Elisabeth Miner set her foot down. She wasn't going a step further. They settled at Morristown, Colorado and there she intended to make a home for her family. Miner could go hunting greener pastures, but he would have to go alone. He did make one more trip to California alone.
Six of the family lived to maturity and their names are all familiar to the pioneers of Middle Park. Willard, the oldest, is remembered as one of the publishers of the Grand Lake Prospector. Susan, who married Tom Johnston, came to Grand Lake in 1881. Laura, who was the wife of Judge J.N.
Pettingell, Mary who married Lon Coffin, a prospector who came to Grand Lake over a snow trail in the winter of 1875, along with Andy Erhardt and Throckmorton and Frank, for many years, a carpenter.
In Rob Johnstons handwriting on a paper taken from a scrap book of Tom and Esther Johnston, Rob states: Hibbord B. Miner was born in Ohio May 10 1825 was married in Indiana and moved to Iowa about Aug. 1 1852 Sometime after Frank was born they moved to Min. His youngest two daughters were born in Kansas. Some time after 1876 they moved to Denver Colorado and later moved to near Morrison Colorado.
83. Elisabeth LAYSUER(LEASURE)
From "The Johnston Family Pioneers of Middle Park, Colorado" Written by Azalea Carr, 1969.
" The Grandma Miner went from one to another of her children, but finally came to Stillwater to live with Tom and Susan. She was so cold that she either was miserable or the family roasted, so Tom built a lean to room on the ranch house and put a good stove in it and kept losts of wood in the wood box and a big pile of wood close by, so she would be warm. She lived with them until she died in 1911. After she died they used that room for the post office. Rob was the Postmaster. It was a sttar route and the stage carried the mail with cream cans, freight and Montgomery Ward orders and supplies.

John is in the 1830 census in Harrodsburg, Mercer county Kentucky.
John is in the 1820 census in Mercer County No township, Kentucky. On Listing the children of John and Eliza, The book on the Tomlinson's in America or "Henry Tomlinson and his decendents" it only lists Sally, James John, Carrie, William and Annie. On the 1850 census lists those I have listed as his children. It shows Sarah as 18 Lucy as 16 Caroline as 14 Amanda and James as 11 and John as 8 All born in Kentucky. The book stateds that he married Eliza Thompson and settled in Harrodsburg, Ky where he practiced his profession as a physican. Since the 1850 census says she was born in Va. I would imagin that they were married in VA or KY but you never know until you find something.
In the 1860 census John is 67. Eliza is 60 says she was born Kentucky. Now which is it Kentucky or Virginia? Caroline is 22 James is 20 Amanda is 20 and John A. Jr. is 18. Sally would be Sarah, and out of the house by 1860 Lucy would be out of the house or died before 1850. Carrie would be Caroline Annie would be Amanda. William is married and living close by.BIRTH: Listed in the War records of Curtiss Tomlinson. Date given.
In the 1860 census she was 60 years old. In the Mercer County Cemetery records has her date of birth and death.
98. Albert Gallatin TALBOTT Hon.
In a book of Biographical Sketches of Kentucky Volumne V That I found in Sutro Library March, 1997, Tells about Albert Gallatin Talbott. I will Quote parts of it. "Hon. Albert Gallatin Talbott was born April 4, 1808 near Paris, Burbon Co., Ky., but in 1813 removed with his parents to Clark County and in 1818 to Jessamine County. He received a classical education at Forest Hill Academy under the tuition of Prof. Samuel Wilson, author of the Latin Ode to Gen. LaFayett, and studied law with Hon Samuel H Woodson. In 1831 he commenced farming and general trading, directing his especial attention to dealing in real estate, and as the result of careful inbestments and judicious sales, within a few years he amassed quite a large fortune for that day. In 1838 he removed to Mercer County, where he sucessfully prosecuted his business as a real estate dealer until 1846, when he located in Boyle County, on the Harrodsburg Pike, three miles from Danville in which vicinity he has since resided. In 1849 he was chosen from Boyle County a member of the Constitutional Convention of Kentucky, and the following year was elected to the legislature without opposition. In 1855 he was elected a representative to Congress in opposition to Know-nothingism which had then assumed hugh proportions, and in 1857 was returned to that honorable body. In 1859 he was elected State seantor for a term of four years, and in 1883 was chosen a representative in the Legislature from Boyle County by about 800 majority. While a member of the Legislature in 1851, foreseeing and fully recongnizing the inevitable consequences of the irrepressible conflict on slavery, Mr Talbott introduced a resolution which was favored by about twenty-five members of the General Assembly, urging the surrender of the slaves of the South to the United States upon the basis of fair compensation by the General Government. This resolution, which attracted wide-spread attention at the time, was presented in order to avert war and preserve the Union intact. Col. Talbott lost about sixty slaves ( in addition to other property) as a result of the late war..." It goes on to say; "He has long been a member of the Masonic fraternity, also a member of the Christian Church and in politics is a Democrate."
In the 1850 Census it lists wife as Mariah who would have been born about 1813 since she was 37. Must have married a second time. Also lists his children and their ages in the 1850 census with Mary being 17 Peter being 16 William being 15 Eliza being 14 and Albert Jr being 13 all born in Kentucky.
I have the list of brother and sisters from a Ruby Simonson McNeill on line. She had wills etc to prove her information.
James Crawford is mentioned as father of Phineas W Crawford. He was a Lawyer.
In the book, at the Sutro Lib., in San Fracisco, called Annals of Iowa, Third Series Vol 8 Page 438 it says: " James Crawford has already been referred to in the preceding sketch as the one time partner of Timothy Davis.
He attained a high reputation as a lawyer and the firm of Davis and Crawford did a large business in the Northern part of the Territory and State.
He was a native of Vermont and came to Dubuque about 1840. He was a man of eminent talents and would have attained a higher reputation than he did had he not been cut down in his prime in 1846." There is a part about Timothy Davis it says that Timothy Davis and James were partners in the firm of Davis and Crawford. That they will be found in connection with many of the early reported cases---for instance, in Bradford vs. Commissioners, Morris, 290; in Lorimer vs. The Bank, ibid, 311...". Also mentions others.. In the "History of Dubuque County it also mentions James as the father of Phineas. Its says that James married a Tirzah M. (White). That the family is of Scotch-Irish ancestry, settled in Vermont during pioneer times and were prominently known in the New England colonies when this country was a dependency of the British crown, and his father was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and participated in the battle of Bunker Hill and Lexington.
He came with his family in 1838 to Dubuque Co. On page 770 of the book it says:" He died in 1846, and his memory is still green in the recollection of the pioneers because of his many sterling qualities of mind and character." In the 1840 census of Iowa lists James Crawford as head of house 1 boy under 5, 1 boy 5-10, 2 boys 10-15 ( which one was Phineas) and one 40 to 50. One woman 40 to 50. Since The mother of the kids died in Vermont, I don't know who this woman would be.BIRTH: On Page 26 in a book I have in my possission called: "Vital Records of Putney, Vermont to the year 1900" says he was born in Putney March 6 1798 the child of Theophilus and Annis.
Tirzah is mentioned in the book " History Of Dubuque County" on page 770, as the wife of James Crawford and the mother of Phineas W Crawford. It is said she died in Vermont before James moved to Dubuque County in 1838.
BIRTH: In the book "Gravestone Inscriptions in Putmey Vermont" by Ken Stezene, Tirzah is listed in The Maple Grove Cemetery ( Cemetery "C" sight 320. Page 53 says, " Tirzah M. White wife of James Crawford, Esq., died Nov. 15, 1837, age 33. This would make her birth in 1804. She is burried with a 10 month old baby James Crawford. He died 10 months after her death which would probably mean she died in child birth. She is burried by Hon Phineas White (#315) Esther Stevens, wife of Hon. Phineas White (# 316) Master Enoch S.White, son of Phineas and Esther White (#319) herself (# 320) In the book "Vital Records of Putney, Vermont" has her name spelled Tirzah Tirrah and Turzah. Which is correct I don't know. On page 123 of this book shows her birthdate and the date she was baptized into the local church. Also on page 156 has her date of marriage to James Crawford.

He is listed as 50 years old and born in Ohio. It also states he was a farmer with Value of real Estate as $12,000 and personal property of $5,000. This should have been a very large farm for $12,000 was alot of money in 1860.

Martha Begley Edens was on the census with her husband but after the 1870 I cannot find her on any other census either with her children nor the Begley's. I can only assume she passed between 1870 and 1880.
